Are you someone who can write equally well in both situations?
When I was younger, I had a hard time focusing in public, even if it was in a quiet library. Maybe I just liked my alone time. I do my best writing in my own home. When it’s warmer, I like sitting outside either on our swing or our picnic table with my furbabies around me.

Surprisingly, I believe I like to write in public more than privately. I don't think I am alone in this, I believe it's why the "writer in the coffee shop" has become such a popular cliché. I don't want it to be loud, but I don't mind having a room with a pulse as well.

I prefer to write at home or in private. I'll put on some music, my headphones and zone out as I get to work. I make sure to take breaks and pace myself so that I don't get burned out.

I have a habit of doing things like, watch a movie for ten minutes then 100 words, watch a movie for ten minutes then 100 words, rinse and repeat. I don't know how much I'd say it actually works out as planned though.

The thing that oddly seemed to help me the most was the time crunch for NaNoWriMo, I just told everyone I'll be focusing on that this month and set a goal of approximately 2.5k words a day. Didn't do editing, grammar tweaks or anything. Wanted to get the story out while it was fresh in my mind and then go back to it. I should do that again. Set a month or two goal, set a daily word objective and go to town until it's done. Then give myself the rest of the year to review it, edit, etc.

I participated a couple times in NaNoWriMo. I love the concept and am glad it worked for you.

I remember when I wrote Katalene, I wrote and edited that 100k book in the neighborhood of two months. Most times though, I am more scattered. I'll write one story one month, then another the next, come back to that other story (having to reread the initial story to catch up my brain - part of my second draft process), rinse and repeat.

Most times, I end up with two books a year out of it and a new manuscripts to make my "primary" focus the next year.

It works as long as I remember to participate every year. I haven't since 2018 primarily because of what would sound like excuses. I just haven't been stricken with the same level of muse yet. I'm hoping by participating in this horror anthology to get over that and get back to writing.

So here's to hoping it works out and I can accomplish something akin to what you do.
