Although I do believe it has something to say for itself, I will never not think of this film as "that bug movie released a month after Bug's Life," then go, "Wasn't there something else weird about it? Right! It stars Woody fucking Allen."

I enjoyed the film when it was first released, and I do think it does have a certain rugged charm that is absent from modern-animation. At the same time, that doesn't change the fact the film was ugly as all hell, even when it came out. Thing is, you can go back and watch Toy Story or (this film's better brother) Bug's Life, and you will notice how dated it looks, but that won't stop you from enjoying the films in the least. This film has a layer of ick to it that is a little more difficult to stomach. That doesn't change the contribution it made to the advancement of animation, but does make it a challenge to recommend it to a casual moviegoer the same way I would early-Pixar fare.
