Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman both immediately came to mind. Malcolm McDowell or Donald Pleasance (both Dr. Loomis!) are also good additions.

Shawshank Redemption is a perfect example of Morgan Freeman's ability to play a "template" - style character, one you can insert yourself into and watch the story as it unfolds.
