Russell Crowe Teases the 'Unexpectedly Dark World' of Spider-Man Spinoff Kraven the Hunter

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe will soon join Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff universe in the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, and the actor has now teased the “unexpectedly dark world” that the Marvel supervillain will inhabit. Speaking with Comic Book Resources, Crowe revealed that he still has a few more scenes to shoot for Kraven the Hunter, and that director J.C. Chandor is “really excited” to introduce his take on the comic book world to audiences. Check out what Russell Crowe had to say about Kraven the Hunter below.

“I haven’t seen it. I haven’t seen it, but I know that we’re going through another round of shooting soon. I’ve got a scene to do in a couple of weeks. I’ve talked to J.C. Chandor, the director. He’s really excited about what he’s got in front of him and really excited about the way people will receive it. I think I can sort of pass on that one of the things he said that it’s just an unexpectedly dark world.”

I don't have a lot of thoughts on this. I am familiar with Kraven the Hunter (mostly from Spider-Man videogames I've played), but I don't have a lot of investment in him. I like his portrayal best when he is sort-of a Most Dangerous Game style character, hunting people, and I hope that comes through in this film. I'm apprehensive though. Sony hasn't impressed me with many of their villain standalone films and I don't suspect this will be much different. I am also not sure about the casting decision for Kraven.

Of all the things I've read, I'm not a real big fan of where they seem to be headed with this villain. I know what Sony wants. They want a bunch of mega-popular superheroes in their own right. However, these aren't superheroes, they're villains. They may have lucked out with Venom, who was popular enough a character to succeed on his own merit, but Morbius and Kraven don't have the same popularity. They are Spider-Man villains and thus, people want to see them as combatants to Spider-Man. That's why it will fail.

You'd be more accurate to call them anti-heroes. Venom, Kraven and a lot of the Spider-Man villains are anti-heroes who have the potential for good, they just prefer to not be confined within the rules society constructs.

Kraven will be interesting if they include Black Cat or the Savage Land.
